Follow the instructions here to download Mission Planner. Do not complete the setup wizard or any other mandatory calibrations besides radio and flight modes; if the setup wizard appears, close it and go directly to Radio Calibration.
If you are an experienced operator, standard mode offers the most dynamic flight experience. If you’re new to flying, try loiter mode. Remember to wait for the green flashing LED prior to takeoff.
If you are new to operating an RC controller, we recommend purchasing a small toy copter like this one to practice on. Once you feel comfortable with that, practice these exercises with your X8:
Skill 1: Hover
Your first step is to maintain a consistent altitude while keeping the X8 oriented so the black arms face towards you and the blue arms face away from you. Practice taking off, rising to a comfortable hovering altitude, and keeping the X8 in place without allowing any changes in orientation or position. If the X8 drifts forward, backward, left, or right, or rotates clockwise or counterclockwise, use the corresponding stick controls to correct.
Skill 2: Box
When you feel comfortable with your ability to maintain a consistent hovering altitude, try flying a box pattern. To practice this, take off, reach your hovering altitude, then fly forward, right, backward, and left by making small adjustments to the right stick. Be sure to fly the box in front of you and not around you. Use the left stick to rotate the X8 so the black arms face towards you and blue arms face away from you for the duration of the exercise.
Skill 3: Figure Eight
When you can confidently navigate a box while maintaining altitude and orientation, try flying a figure-eight pattern. Again, be sure to fly the figure eight in front of you and not around you. Use the right stick to create a smooth flight path while using the left stick to correct orientation and maintain altitude.
No, the initial setup process has already been completed for you, and your copter is ready to fly! When using Mission Planner or APM Planner, re-performing the calibrations on the initial setup screen, including the mandatory hardware configurations and setup wizard, can adversely affect the performance of your aircraft. After downloading Mission Planner or APM Planner, select the flight data or flight plan screens to get started planning missions and monitoring your copter. Do not complete the setup wizard or perform any of the calibrations on the initial setup screen unless you are connecting an RC system.
No, you cannot fly the X8 without a transmitter turned on and connected to your copter. During an autonomous mission, the X8 is controlled by the autopilot without input from the transmitter; despite that, always keep the transmitter turned on and ready to use at any moment.
Choose an open, outdoor area away from people, buildings, and airports. If the copter loses connection with the transmitter, runs out of battery, or loses GPS signal in a GPS-dependent mode, it lands automatically. This means that you shouldn’t fly anywhere that a landing anywhere along the flight path would cause an unsafe situation for people or property. Make sure to check your local regulations for areas where RC flying is permitted; do not fly in areas where motorized vehicles or RC aircraft are prohibited. Many areas have designated RC flying fields where you can fly safely and legally. Don’t fly in a confined area like a small backyard or balcony.
